Ref: 0009930-15: "Dharma" Seal
This is a fine Italian seal that consists of a waxed turned wooden handle and a bronze disc engraved with an eight-spoke wheel.
It is said that the Buddha was reluctant to accept his images, as he did not want to be worshipped.
The earliest artistic representations symbolizing the Buddha depicted an eight-spoked wheel.
The wheel is a reference to the story that, shortly after the Buddha attained enlightenment, Brahma descended from heaven to ask him to teach, offering him a Dharmachakra.
The Buddha is known as the one who turns the wheel: the one who sets in motion a new cycle of teachings and thus changes the course of destiny.
The Dharmachakra has eight spokes, a symbol of the Noble Eightfold Path (Wisdom Path: 1 Right View, 2 Right Resolve; Morality Path: 3 Right Speech, 4 Right Action, 5 Right Livelihood; Mental Discipline Path (or Buddhist Meditation): 6 Right Effort, 7 Right Mindfulness, 8 Right Concentration).
The three segments in the middle represent the Buddha, the Dharma (the teachings) and the Sangha (the spiritual community).
The wheel can also be divided into three parts, each representing an aspect of Buddhist practice: the hub (discipline), the spokes (wisdom), and the circle (concentration).
Total length of the sealing stamp: 9.5 cm.
Length of the bronze piece screwed to the end of the handle, on which the pellet fits: 1.7 cm.
Diameter of the bronze pellet: 22.5 mm.
Diameter of the screw thread of the pellet: 4 mm.
Made in Italy.
