This is a fine Italian seal that features a waxed turned wooden handle and a bronze disc engraved with an eagle in flight.
The majesty of the eagle has led to the adoption of this bird as a symbol in many different cultures throughout the ages.
Two key examples: the golden eagle with outstretched wings was used as a symbol of the Roman Empire, and the bald (or white-headed) eagle is the symbol of the United States of America.
In the third millennium BC, the Babylonians associated the double-headed eagle with Ningirsu of Lagash, the god of storms, war, and fertility.
